Australia leads the world in rooftop solar, but battery storage has lagged behind due to high upfront costs. The new $2.3 billion Cheaper Home Batteries Program aims to change that. Backed by the Australian Government and run by the Clean Energy Regulator (CER), this national Australian battery rebate program is designed to make clean, reliable energy storage system access easier for households and small businesses.

The discount is tied to the battery’s usable capacity and will gradually decrease until 2030. From 1 July 2025, batteries are covered under the Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme following updates to national regulations.

What the Program Offers for Homes and Businesses

The Cheaper Home Batteries Program offers around a 30% discount on the upfront cost of installing an eligible home battery. This discount is

  • Fully funded by the federal government
  • Based on the usable capacity of your battery (up to 50 kWh)
  • Applied at the point of installation, so there’s no extra paperwork for you
  • Available for new or existing solar systems

This battery rebate aims to make it easier for everyday Australians to store solar energy and use it when it’s needed most, which is after dark, on cloudy days, or during outages. By smoothing out peak demand, battery storage also helps keep the grid more stable and can reduce energy costs for everyone over time.

Eligibility and Battery System Requirements

To be eligible, your battery system must meet a few key criteria:

  • It must have a total capacity between 5 kWh and 100 kWh
  • Only the first 50 kWh of usable capacity is eligible for the discount
  • Your system must be connected to a new or existing solar PV system
  • Installation must follow local electrical safety requirements and use:
    • A battery listed on the Clean Energy Council (CEC) approved product list
    • An accredited installer certified by Solar Accreditation Australia (SAA)

Combining Rebates and Support from State Schemes

This national rebate scheme can be combined with existing state and territory schemes, depending on your eligibility. That means you may be able to access multiple layers of support to reduce the cost of your battery system. Some households may also qualify for discounted finance through programs like the Household Energy Upgrades Fund.
